It really was like this … only weeks ago!

Sixteen members of the Local Walks Group were blessed with perfect weather for their annual one-day walk on August 15th. We started at Ashendon, rested briefly for a drink at ‘The Crown’ in Cuddington, and then made for Chearsley where we had lunch in the garden at ‘The Bell’. Thus fortified, we were ready for the final push back to Ashendon which was mostly uphill.

The attached photos (by Peter Ashton) show the group making their way between Ashendon and Cuddington, and the church and a cottage in Cuddington. Continue reading

The Young at heart Helping the Young in Years

Our U3A has been fortunate enough to be welcomed into two schools who have accommodated small group meetings and given us considerable help. Some years ago, as a small thank you gesture, it was decided that we should offer both of them a ‘U3A Bursary’ – a gesture which has been much appreciated.

The only stipulation is that it is awarded to a pupil for ‘community involvement’ which falls outside the normal school curriculum. That help can be given within the school or in the wider community. It has been our experience to date that many of the students recipients have done both. Our organisation has left the decision to select a pupil to the teaching staff.

Our representatives attend the prize giving at which the awards are made, thus strengthening our involvement with these establishments.

THE VIRTUAL U3A

There is now a ‘Virtual U3A (vU3a) in existence which went on- line in January 2009. It is on-line only and affiliated to the Third Age Trust. One of its principal aims is to provide the U3A experience for those who may isolated in some way – by geography or circumstances and unable to play a full part in a terrestrial U3A.
The fee is currently £12 – payable on-line only and all that is necessary is for the applicant to have a computer connected to the internet (Broad band preferably). Groups usually consist of 6 – 12 people, with one elected a leader/co-ordinator and a quick look online will show existing groups dealing with areas such as literature, science, photography etc. There is also an on-line ‘common room’ where members can ‘chat’ with others, suggest new areas of interest or just share ideas.
If you know anyone who might be interested they can look at the site on www.vu3a.org where they can get details of existing groups and apply for membership.

Leading

Welcome to Aylesbury Vale U3A

If you have retired from your full time job, we know that you will still have many skills to share, and maybe many interests that you still want to pursue. Our brains don’t retire, and we know from our own membership, that many of us find our ‘third age’ gives us a wonderful opportunity to pursue new activities, or share and increase our knowledge of existing areas of interest. So we invite you to read on and find out more about what U3A has to offer.
