Chalfont St Giles
For their annual Summer outing Readers Group 1 spent a lovely day in Chalfont St Giles. After a fine lunch at The Ivy House we made our way to Milton’s Cottage. The cottage is open from 2pm to 5pm, Wednesday to Saturday John Milton lived there for a year when he escaped the plague in London, and it was here that he finished Paradise Lost.
We were met by a very helpful lady who, despite not expecting us, welcomed us, helped us manipulate a walking frame and provided chairs, whilst sorting out how we might pick up the less able walkers in the group on leaving, as there was a complete road closure just outside the cottage when we arrived.
A local student gave us a free guided tour of the three rooms, with many original features and original copies of Milton’s works. We then made our way into the pretty cottage garden where we enjoyed the afternoon sun.
The photo shows some of us in the garden. We had a very enjoyable outing, and our tickets last for a year so we can go again.
